Sarah Necker has been Professor of Economics at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg and Director of the Ludwig Erhard ifo Center for Social Market Economy and Institutional Economics since 2022. She studied at the universities of Marburg and Stellenbosch/South Africa. She earned her doctorate at the universities of Heidelberg and Freiburg and worked as a research associate at the Walter Eucken Institute. Research stays took her to the University of Chicago and the Université de Rennes 1. She is a Senior Research Associate at the Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) and a member of the CESifo network. Sarah Necker is also part of the female economists' network of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

In her research, Sarah Necker focuses on the interaction between markets, institutions, and behavior. She is particularly interested in how institutional and individual factors influence economically and politically relevant decisions. For example, she examines how the tax and transfer system affects behavior and what causes and consequences misperceptions of economic policy measures may have.
